Brad Johnston founded Johnston Law Offices, P.C. after serving as the general counsel of a large agricultural company for four and a half years. Brad’s love of the law and serving clients of all backgrounds drove him back to private practice after serving as the general counsel for his long-time client. His goal in establishing the firm was simple — to provide clients of all types with great legal service in a cost-effective, solution-oriented manner that was focused on them.
Brad graduated first in his law school class at The Ohio State University College of Law in 1998, and served as a law clerk for Judge Melvin Brunetti of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit following law school. After completing his judicial clerkship in 1999, Brad moved to New York City, where he worked as a litigation associate at large international law firms until he decided to return to Reno in 2003. Brad then joined Hale Lane (now Holland & Hart), where he practiced commercial litigation and became a partner of the firm in 2006. In 2010, Brad was asked by a long-time client to leave private practice and become its general counsel in Yerington. Brad accepted. During Brad’s tenure as the general counsel of one of Nevada’s leading agricultural companies, he learned first-hand what it was like to run a large business in today’s legal environment and to be a client that works with outside attorneys. Brad decided to bring his unique experience to his own firm and returned to private practice in 2014 to broaden his practice and serve more clients. Although Brad left his position as general counsel, he still works for his former employer as its outside counsel in addition to other clients Brad has served since 2003.
Brad’s continuing desire to broaden the firm’s practice and serve clients of all backgrounds prompted the firm to expand its practice to representing individuals in criminal cases in 2016. Since that time, Brad, as a Lyon County Public Defender, has represented hundreds of clients in felony cases. In fact, Brad has represented individuals charged with crimes ranging from murder to sexual assault to drug trafficking, zealously advocating on their behalf. In any criminal case, protecting the rights of the accused is the firm’s primary focus.
Brad is also actively involved in the Yerington community. He provides pro bono legal services to the Boys & Girls Club of Mason Valley and to Walker River Little League. Brad is also the former chairman of the Lyon County Citizen Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife, and a current member of the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, after being appointed to the Commission by Governor Brian Sandoval in 2014.
Brad lives in Yerington with his wife Stephani and their three children — A.J., Jaxon, and Michael.
